Move That Data Fast....

I just installed a couple of these in a friends pc and are they ever slick. You can remove a hardrive in about 5 seconds. He paid $20 each at Microcenter. No need to reomove the case or cables. Just unlock, lift handle and the hardrive slides out. Way cool....

Just FYI, these are commonly called "hot swap bays".

They don't cost a lot to add, but for a typical home computer their usefulness is somewhat dubious.

On a server that is running multiple-mirrored hard disks, the point of these things is that if one disk fails, you can pull it out, put a new one in and rebuild the disk array without shutting down the server.

You don't always see these on "tower"-style servers, but rack-mounts tend to have them:

For hiding your *ahem* "adult multimedia" from the children, a external USB drive is probably easier to deal with.

I've worked on plenty of pc's where the hardrive is a pain to get in and out. These bays are so easy and fast. Plus there is a fan built into the bay, pulling air through the bay. That is a big plus.

My friend' s pc had 4 large case fans, a fan on cpu heat sink, a fan on the video card and a fan on each of those bays I installed.

I keep thinking of those who have to bug out fast do to rising water, fire or whatever. You can quickly grab your hardrives in a situation like that. Then again they may be worthless to you.

I dont have mine set up like that, but all I need to do is slide the side of the case off(leave it unscrewed, but secured) pull the power and cables out and then just slide the hard drive out. I have two computers and about 4 harddrive so I swap em around quite a bit. But at the same time its comforting to be able to quickly access and remove them...just in case the need may ever arrise. Now I just need to figure out a way to permently destroy them and keep them from being pieced back together and read.

I'm a huge data junkie and I have a few lifetimes of data stored on several TB of RAID drives and a generous amount more backed up on various optical media but when it comes time to pull anchor and scuttle the very last thing on the list would be anything tech related. FWIW.

What I worry about more is not outrunning SHTF but a Knock-Knock in the middle of the night a few years(months) from now when the thought police start going after those considered Domestic Terrorist(revolutionaries) and they want what you have on your PC

Truecrypt.org

It's pretty much an encrypted partition scheme. To top it off you can even have a "dummy" 1st partition that you can cough the keys to but there is actually a second encrypted partition that is indistinguishable from digital noise on the trailing end. I don't doubt that it can be hacked out by some CIA supersleuth but I figure I'm toast anyhow if it reaches that point. In the meantime it keeps my employer in the dark and I don't have to drill my harddrives out when I let a machine go. For added umph run the actual program from a separate drive like a USB key so that the installed application isn't a giveaway.

EDIT: PS: It's phree.

hmmmm...that would be nice for thise whole new thing about email searches and airports. But you're right, if it gets to that extreme, you're f*** anyways and if they cant find something to pin on your ass, theyll make up something cause they've already deemed you that much of a threat.

For real. Also avoid using blackberries or other phones with wi-fi connection or gps (duh). BB admins if they are smart can get to your home network through your phone while you think you are just getting a better phone signal. The gps thing is obvious, they could see me taking a shit, practically. Keep your business and personal separate or be really careful. Be really careful anyway. Take anything off your computer that could be used against you, as your computer itself will become a record of "anything you say".

Get off the microsoft....

and many other things that I am not doing to the extent that I should

I wouldn't go to any airport or any kind of a check point with a hardrive. Pull it and send it to your destination. Back it up first though.
